Promoting Learner Autonomy
Regarding to the term of autonomy,
there arise other tearms related. Self –instruction means that the students are
able to do something without the teachers’ direction. Self-direction is the
learners’ initiative to decide what is good for them. Self-access learning is
using other media for learning such as technology and other material. Individualized
instruction is a common environment regarding to the learners’ characteristics.
Those terms bear some
classifications based on the objectives. The first is narrow view of learning
autonomy which means learning to learn. Academic achievement is emphasized as
the concern of this point. Planning, monitoring, problem-solving, and
evaluation are the four processes in this part. Also, the learners should be
engaged with their own learning styles and strategies in order to be
autonomous. The second is learning to liberate. In this part, the learners are
encourages not only to be autonomous but also critical. Therefore, it is
emphasized through their potential. Selecting the appropriate teachniques
should be done such as asking them to make a daily or weekly journal, promoting
interactions, triggering their citical thinking, etc. There are some stages
that should be paid attention. The first stage of the beginning for being
autonomous is the awareness. It means that they must recognize the importance
of autonomy. Then, they can make their own choice. The last it that they decide
their purpose, assigment, and other madia.
There
are two microstrategies to encourage the learners to be autonomous. The first
is specificied to where they want to belong. The second is the learning
strategy. This is more detail and the learners knowing the style that they want
to apply.thus, it is similat to the provious summary, the teacher’s ability to
handle the classrom is needed.

The teachers are suggested to raise the students’ awareness towards the
importance of LA throught informing, distributing, discussing about what the
teacher plans to do. Also, by communication with the students and their
parents, the teacher will discuss the LA concept. The teacher can use
alternative methods and compromise it. In the beginning, the teacher are
suggested to use simple way such as can
do checklist and give more challenging task after that.

Critical Analysis
Promoting the
learners to be autonomous is not done through asking them to learn by them
selves. There many points that should be considered. The teacher should be able
to motivate them and direct them to be independent. Awareness should be
emphasized first as it is stated in the first degree. However, I think that
this term can appropriately be implemented in urban areas not rural areas. In
rural areas, the teacher is the only source of information and knowledge for
them. On the contrary, learners in urban areas already made use technologies
and many media are provided. Therefore, the promoting of learner autonomy can
be little bit difficult. It somehow can be implemented in different way such as
triggering them to be citacal thinking.
